Steam Free Download is a Must Play For Resident Evil Gamers

The countdown to Resident Evil Requiem is on, but it’s some way away.

The highly anticipated Capcom title is set to land on 27 February 2026, so it certainly won’t be here in time for spooky season.

However, I do have something else that may appeal to you that’s equally as eerie and unsettling.

The Last Portrait is an upcoming horror title from developer LOCKDOWN Adventures and while it lacks a release date, a free demo has just been launched on PC storefront Steam.

“Dark legends surround the abandoned mansion Ashwood Manor: Once, an art collector lived here, and his most valuable piece is said to still be hidden in the villa,” the synopsis begins.

“Break into the house, solve the puzzles of Ashwood Manor, steal the cursed painting – and escape. Are you brave enough?” it continues.

As you’ve likely gathered, gameplay consists of exploration, puzzle solving, and avoiding whatever nasties reside inside Ashwood Manor.

Interestingly, the game’s description doesn’t mention any kind of combat.

“Is the old mansion truly abandoned? Find out—and beware the haunting presence that lurks behind every corner,” it reads.

“Become the hunter, then the hunted! Have you found the painting? Then get it out of the house. But will Ashwood Manor ever let you walk free again?”

With this in mind, it’s perhaps more likely that you’ll need to outrun or evade the manor’s horrors rather than confront them head on.

Puzzle solving will also require you to find your fair share of hidden objects; that may sound simple on paper but I’m assuming it’s far less so when it requires you to venture into dark, shadowy rooms.

I’m a wimp. I’ve played Phasmophobia and I know I am terrible at walking into dark locations where I don’t know what awaits me.

This game does use some generative AI which is certainly less than ideal to see.

The developer explains that it was used to generate some in-game images, like paintings, or to create some audio elements.

The rest is all hand-crafted, however.

There are no reviews at the time of writing, but the demo has only just gone live so that’s perhaps to be expected.

Given that this demo is totally free though, I reckon it’s worth your time.

If you like what you play, I’m sure the developer would appreciate your wishlisting the title.

That way, you’ll be able to stay up to date on its progress as it heads towards a launch date reveal.
