The coming weeks will be decisive for the future of Xbox. After several moves to benefit gamers, CEO Asha Sharma now plans to “reset” the brand over the next 100 days, which means layoffs and a focus on certain franchises.
During a recent interview, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO himself, addressed the gaming division. He explained that after heavy investment, Xbox must now become “a sustainable business”. Going forward, the American company wants to truly monetize this entertainment rather than subsidize it. That is why major changes are planned.
“No one can accuse Microsoft of not having invested for the last 25 years. And now we have to turn this into a sustainable business. that offers what is fundamentally one of the best sources of entertainment. Our challenge is that we haven’t monetized this entertainment. On the contrary, we’ve actually subsidized it. In reality, XBOX games are monetized more on YouTube than at Microsoft.”
Nadella also noted that Sharma and her teams will face the daunting task of unifying the XBOX platforms across all devices (consoles, PCs, mobile devices, the cloud, etc.). This is in response to current challenges related to component prices and the rise of AI.
