Review of The Adventures of Elliot The Millenium Tales: the JRPG passes with good grades

Square Enix is back with a brand-new action RPG featuring an HD-2D art style. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales launches this Thursday, June 18, on PS5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC. Press reviews were released a few hours before launch.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales has earned an average score of 79% on Metacritic for its Switch 2 version (35 reviews). The game scored 82% on PS5 (34 reviews) and 79% on PC (14 reviews). Meanwhile, its OpenCritic score stands at 82% (36 reviews).

Unsurprisingly, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales has been praised for its superb art direction. The game also shines thanks to its moving story, its substantial playtime (about 30 hours), and its gameplay that evokes nostalgia for the SNES era. The combat and combos are also very enjoyable.

As for its flaws, we noted some rough edges in the gameplay, AI that doesn’t always measure up, and repetitive exploration. Furthermore, the game doesn’t break new ground and relies on a somewhat tried-and-true formula.
