Resident Evil Requiem Short Film Highlights the Tragedy of Raccoon City (and Hints at What’s to Come)

As nice as it is to hear that Zach Cregger of Weapons fame is working on a new live-action Resident Evil film, you should never count out Capcom. Case in point, a new short film for Resident Evil Requiem, titled “Evil Has Always Had A Name,” is live, focusing on a single mother and her daughter in Raccoon City.

It starts innocently enough, showcasing how perfect their lives are, before the outbreak suddenly hits. Suddenly, they’re screaming through the streets with zombies roaming, RPD fighting back, and explosions ringing out. Tragically, that’s not the end. One shot sees the mother bashing what may be a zombie’s head in. Another sees them crouching behind a corner to avoid a Licker and seemingly getting caught.

Fast forward to after the bombs dropped. The daughter seemingly died without turning, but her mother wasn’t so lucky. Suddenly, she’s shot through the head as a mysterious individual proclaims, “Raccoon City is ours.”

Since Resident Evil Requiem has showcased similar-looking aerial shots of the crater post-destruction, it’s safe to assume that this is present-day Raccoon City – the same setting as the game. Who are these people, though? What is the “facility” they’re referring to? Is the “Evil” referring to none other than Umbrella?

We won’t know for sure until it launches on February 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. But between Grace Ashcroft fighting for survival, Victor Gideon pursuing Grace, and just another day on the job for Leon, there is a lot left to answer.
