Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen will not have online multiplayer on Switch

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have decided to relaunch the FireRed and LeafGreen versions on Switch on February 27. They will be sold at a unit price of €19.99.

Unfortunately, don’t expect any changes from the original game released in 2004 on Game Boy Advance. The resolution has simply been increased, but the visuals have not been modernized.

The same goes for the features. Those present on GBA will make a comeback, but no new elements, such as online multiplayer, have been added.

« All of the original connectivity features of the games will work exactly as they did on the Game Boy Advance via a local wireless connection. »

This means that up to four players will be able to get together locally to trade Pokémon or take part in battles or mini-games. It will not be possible to do any of this remotely.

Finally, Nintendo has also stated that there will be no notable differences when playing on Switch 2. The latter will simply benefit from GameChat.

It’s interesting to see Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen making a comeback on the Switch! While it’s a bit disappointing that online multiplayer won’t be included, many fans will likely enjoy revisiting these classic games. It’s great to keep the nostalgia alive in new ways!

great nostalgia trip, it’s a bit disappointing that there won’t be online multiplayer. It would have been fun to trade and battle with friends across the globe, just like we did back in the day! Still, it’s a wonderful way to introduce new players to the classic games.
