Koei Tecmo’s beloved Dead or Alive fighting game series returns to PlayStation 5 later this week. To learn more about Dead or Alive 6 Last Round, which is an enhanced version of the 2019 game with plenty of exciting new features, PlayStation LifeStyle spoke with series producer Yosuke Hayashi. Dead or Alive 6 Last Round launches on June 25, 2026.

“Fan-favorite 3D fighting game Dead or Alive 6 is back with stylish moves, striking animations, and a cast of colorful characters to go head-to-head in the fighting game world’s most extreme battles!” says the official description. “Place, pose, and take picture-perfect screenshots of your favorite characters in the new Photo Mode. Play with the classic DOA6 roster and 5 additional DLC characters from the original version, along with new costumes. Whether you’re a new player or a longtime veteran, Dead or Alive 6 Last Round has the action you’re looking for.

Tyler Treese: Dead or Alive 6 has had a long life cycle. Most studios don’t get to further enhance and continue refining a game seven years later. What’s been most fulfilling about going back and further refining everything for Last Round?

Yosuke Hayashi: Dead or Alive 6 was a fairly high-end title when it launched, with its graphics and character models. With this game, we’ve fine-tuned it to meet the current and latest hardware and look forward to seeing everyone play it in a comfortable environment.

The new Oboro lighting system is going to be introduced. We’ve seen how it looks in Lost Paradise. More stages will support it over time. What’s most exciting for you to see these familiar stages look so natural and gorgeous thanks to this new system?

This time, with the introduction of Oboro, we have improved the quality of natural expressions, such as the precision in the way light is reflected or creates shadows, reflections, and natural lighting. It has also made it possible to create environments that are more photorealistic and up to current visual standards. I believe players will enjoy having a completely different impression when playing familiar stages.

Can we expect any PlayStation-specific features, such as DualSense integration or a PS5 Pro mode?

No, there are none.

Photo Mode was a heavily requested new feature that people are really going to enjoy. What kind of options can we expect there?

The Dead or Alive series is not just about being a fun fighting game with deep strategy; “beauty” is one of the themes important to the series. We aimed to create the ultimate photo mode in fighting entertainment, where players can freely recreate various scenes not only through the camera composition, but with details including the characters’ motions, placement, facial expressions, and even sweat. As long as the location is a place that is used in battles, anywhere in that stage can be photographed, and stages that use Oboro can create even more photorealistic shots.

We invite players to put characters in their favorite costumes, compose battle scenes across different stages, and shoot that one, exciting picture they want to share with the world!

The game looks better and has more content. What sort of gameplay improvements can we expect?

The five characters that were available as DLC for Dead or Alive 6 will be available from the very start in the standard edition of this game. We think this is a chance not only for new players, but also for those who have played the original game but haven’t yet tried these characters to enjoy them. Also, when it comes to visuals, this game supports 4K gameplay, providing more intense gameplay for those with a compatible system, and if Oboro is activated in supported stages, players can also experience even more photorealistic graphics.

In addition, we plan to continue adding content post-launch through DLC and updates. With this title, we hope to excite the Dead or Alive community along with the players.

I’m sure you can’t say too much about the new characters coming post-launch, but can you speak to the team’s philosophy behind continuing to add new characters to Last Round when a new game is being developed? It should certainly make the wait easier for fans.

The Dead or Alive fighting game series has been dormant for quite a while. Of course, we had no intention of ending the series, so we want to get everyone fired up again, starting with Dead or Alive 6 Last Round. And to let everyone know we are serious about this and want to have everyone enjoy the series in this new environment, we thought it was essential to add a completely new character to the roster – we made this decision from the very start and created them alongside the game’s development. We look forward to the day we can deliver them to you! Please look forward to future updates!

Thanks to Yosuke Hayashi for taking the time to talk about Dead or Alive 6 Last Round.
