Obsidian co-founder believes Bethesda isn’t capable of making a Fallout: New Vegas remaster

While eagerly awaiting the fifth installment in the series, Fallout fans are hoping for a modernized version of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Rumors have been swirling about this in recent weeks, but Bethesda has not confirmed anything yet.

In a recent interview, Chris Avellone, one of the co-founders of Obsidian where he served as creative director, expressed reservations about a possible remaster of New Vegas. In fact, he believes that Bethesda is currently unable to carry out such a project.

“I don’t think Bethesda has the engineering knowhow to make a remaster of New Vegas at all.”

Avellone also revealed that the source code for the original game was not provided to Bethesda once development was complete. This presents an additional challenge.

“The very last milestone for New Vegas was: ‘deliver all the source code and the ability to make the build and we’ll pay you about $10,000 for it.’ In reality, this meant that if Bethesda received all these elements, they could recreate the game at any time. For reasons unknown to me, but I have suspicions, [Obsidian studio head] Feargus [Urquhart] decided not to cash out that milestone, and did not deliver it.”

Finally, Chris Avellone concluded by saying that Bethesda might have some elements of the source code in its possession. However, several people have reportedly confirmed that the studio wouldn’t know how to reassemble it.

I completely agree! The original game’s charm really set it apart, and a remaster would need to capture that essence while updating the graphics and mechanics. It would be fascinating to see how modern technology could enhance the storytelling without losing the original’s spirit.
