NVIDIA is once again defending DLSS 5

The announcement of DLSS 5 went decidedly awry for NVIDIA. The American company faced a barrage of criticism regarding the results of this new iteration, which is designed to improve in-game performance and image quality.

Jensen Huang, the company’s CEO, had previously retorted that internet users’ perspective was “completely wrong”. But in a recent podcast with Lex Fridman, his tone shifted slightly. Now, Huang is seeking to reassure users.

“I understand their perspective and I see where they’re coming from, because I don’t like the slapdash AI-generated content either. You know, all AI-generated content is starting to look more and more alike, and it’s all gorgeous, so I get where they’re coming from.

That’s not what DLSS 5 is trying to do. I’ve shown several examples, but DLSS 5 is driven and guided by 3D. It relies on real structural data. So the artist has determined the geometry, which we faithfully adhere to. That geometry is preserved in every frame. The rendering is driven by the textures and the artist’s creative talent. So every frame is enhanced without changing anything.”

It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to convince gamers.
