The indie game Allumeria, which is scheduled for early access on Steam this year, has received significant media coverage in an unconventional way.
The developer, Unomelon, had been facing a DMCA complaint from Microsoft since February 10. The American company accused the title of reusing content from Minecraft, “including but not limited to gameplay and assets without authorisation”. As a result, the voxel sandbox game was removed from Valve’s store.
This complaint, which appears to have been issued automatically, was ultimately withdrawn by Microsoft. Unomelon revealed this on its Discord server.
“This is the best case scenario. I am still not sure about the details, but whatever happened, it worked. The Steam page and game has been fully restored, and I did not need to file a counterclaim, meaning there will be no chance of a lawsuit.
My hope is that automated claims like this are investigated or prevented in the future. DMCA claims can do serious damage to independent creators like myself. Whether on YouTube or Steam.”
