Devil May Cry remake on the way claims insider ahead of 25th anniversary

A new rumour claims a Devil May Cry remake is ‘pretty far along’ at Capcom, as the series approaches a landmark anniversary.

It’s been over seven years since Devil May Cry 5 launched in 2019 and despite the success of the Netflix series, there hasn’t been another new entry since or even any hint at one.

Capcom’s lack of attention to the franchise seems perplexing when you consider Devil May Cry 5 has sold almost 13 million copies and the game has done better than ever over the past year, thanks to Netflix. The departure of the series’ long-time director, Hideaki Itsuno, in 2024 may have affected plans, but that’s still two years ago and the lack of any new announcements is very surprising.

However, according to one insider, however, Capcom has been working on a revamped version of the original Devil May Cry and it’s ‘pretty far along’ in development.

This comes from X user MajorPlayeix, who accurately predicted that a port of Metaphor: ReFantazio is coming to Switch 2 – even if that wasn’t much of a surprise.

In a post on X, they wrote: ‘Let’s be blunt about it. You’re getting a DMC1 Remake. Yes. Just like those rumours said.’

In a follow-up post, they added: ‘Hearing it’s pretty far along actually but I’ll have to see for myself before making any release/trailer date bets.’

While they don’t go into details around the scale of the ‘remake’, they do claim it is being developed in RE Engine, which implies it will be a big graphical overhaul and not a case of him conflating the term remaster with remake. The original Devil May Cry was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2001.

The same leaker has made other claims around Capcom’s future slate. Earlier this month, they said a new Ace Attorney game will be announced this year, although that is yet to materialise, even if it has been rumoured by other sources as well.

There is, however, some reason to believe a Devil May Cry announcement could be on the horizon. Beyond the spike in sales for Devil May Cry 5, the franchise will celebrate its 25th anniversary on August 23, 2026.

That’s three days out from Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 26, and with Capcom’s strong relationship with host Geoff Keighley, it’s possible some kind of reveal could be lined-up for the event.

In fact, Capcom has already confirmed it will have a big presence on the show floor, with playable versions of Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen and Mega Man: Dual Override.

At the same time, games companies are very hit-and-miss when it comes to celebrating anniversaries, so at this point nothing is certain.

As one of Capcom’s biggest franchises though, it’s hard to imagine the studio isn’t cooking up something to mark the occasion. Capcom made several announcements for Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary in March this year, including symphony concerts and theme park collaborations.

A Devil May Cry remake has been rumoured for some time as well, and following Capcom’s success with the Resident Evil remakes, it makes sense to try the same magic with the action series. Famously, Devil May Cry was originally conceived as a concept for 2005’s Resident Evil 4, before it evolved into a separate title.

We’ll have to wait and see if this remake does come to fruition, but Capcom’s future slate is already looking pretty strong between Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, Resident Evil Veronica, and Mega Man: Dual Override.
