Some turn-based combat systems didn’t offer a lot of innovations coming out of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. For a time, that didn’t really matter as long as they were still fun or the story was good. There are still a surprising number of turn-based RPGs that are the opposite and were ahead of their time, with many features, including combat.
