Despite complaints of PC optimization leading to a currently “Mixed” rating, Borderlands 4 marks the series’ biggest launch on Steam yet. It peaked at 288,130 concurrent players according to SteamDB.
This is significantly higher than Borderlands 2, the series’ previous best which topped nearly 125,000 peak concurrent players. Borderlands 3 peaked at 93,820 concurrent players on the platform but it’s a special case, having first launched as a one-year exclusive on the Epic Games Store.
As Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford recently stated, Borderlands 4 should help propel the series to 100 million lifetime sales. Its individual sales should be interesting to see, especially since Borderlands 2 has sold over 30 million units to date, followed by Borderlands 3 at more than 23 million sold.
