For several years now, Unity and Unreal Engine have been the most widely used game engines by professionals in the video game industry. Both are utilized in both AAA games and indie titles.
However, Europe could soon have its own engine with the goal of offering a viable alternative to the two American giants. That’s the plan proposed by Arjan Brussee, co-founder of Guerrilla Games (Killzone, Horizon) and former technical director at Epic Games. His engine, called « The Immensive Engine », aims to offer more choices for studios looking to break away from Epic Games or Unity.
« Currently, no one is developing a fully European-hosted engine, built by Europeans and compliant with European rules and regulations. The creation of usable 3D worlds is becoming increasingly important, certainly for uses beyond just video games. »
Furthermore, artificial intelligence is being utilized right from the engine’s design phase.
« The rise of AI is forcing us to rethink the development of this type of essential software. Drawing on my experience and my vision of how things should ideally work, I see opportunities here. If you’re smart and know how to implement a good AI agent framework, you can do the work of ten or fifteen people. »
