Since almost all major video game publishers have turned to artificial intelligence tools, it’s no surprise to learn that Electronic Arts is also using this.
In an interview with the BBC, commentator Guy Mowbray, who has been working on the EA Sports FC franchise since 2023, discussed the process of recording his voice. It’s quite lengthy and repetitive, to say the least, as it involves reading the names of each of the more than 20,000 players in the franchise, with different intonations depending on the situation.
Mowbray explained that this activity is “is part of my weekly routine – pretty much every week from November all the way through to the start of July”. To simplify this task, the commentator has authorized EA to use generative AI to reproduce his voice in order to record certain names without requiring his presence in the recording studio. The American company explained that the technique has been used for a long time and that it is “always a collaboration with our talent, not a replacement”.
Finally, Guy Mowbray added that the longest lines always come from him, as they need to be delivered naturally.
