Yacht Club Games is gambling its survival on Mina the Hollower

Originally scheduled for release on October 31, Mina the Hollower was ultimately delayed indefinitely. Given the success of Shovel Knight, we might have thought that Yacht Club Games was on solid footing.

Unfortunately, that may not be the case. In an interview with Bloomberg, studio co-founder and director Sean Velasco said that sales of Mina the Hollower will determine the future of the company.

“It’s double or nothing, that’s for sure. If we sell 500,000 copies, that’ll be perfect. If we sell even 200,000, that would be really great. If we sell, say, 100,000, that would be less good.”

Although Shovel Knight has sold over 3 million copies, the studio has already “spent most of its capital.” The workforce has also been reduced and a second project put on hold. Velasco still wanted to be optimistic, saying that even if Mina the Hollower were to be a failure, Yacht Club Games could survive. It would just need more money.

delays can lead to a better final product. In the case of Mina the Hollower, taking extra time might allow the developers to refine gameplay and polish graphics, which could ultimately enhance the overall experience for players.
