This week, during its State of Unreal event, Epic Games provided details about the future of its engine. That’s when Unreal Engine 5.8 made its debut.
Among the new features in this version is the optimization of the Lumen lighting system for the Switch 2. This tool, which calculates light bounce in real time, is now fully functional on Nintendo’s console. Epic has reduced the technology’s impact on the GPU while largely preserving the visual quality. As a result, global illumination can now run at 60 FPS on the Switch 2.
Lumen has thus become a viable feature on the hybrid console. Although few games on the Japanese publisher’s console use the Unreal Engine 5, those that do can now benefit from this significant advantage.

This is an exciting update for Unreal Engine 5.8! It’s great to see advancements in Lumen technology and the compatibility with Switch 2. Looking forward to seeing how this impacts game development and performance!
