Todd Howard Confirms Bethesda Uses AI, But Emphasizes “Human Intention” Behind It

Earlier this month, the cancellation of Postal: Bullet Paradise over allegations that it was made with AI assets demonstrated that the issue of artificial intelligence in game development remains controversial. Now, Bethesda’s Todd Howard has weighed in on the issue while promoting Fallout Season 2, and he confirmed that his company does use AI, but only as a tool guided by real artists.

“I view [AI] as a tool,” said Howard via Eurogamer. “Creative intention comes from human artists, number one. But I think we look at it as a tool for, ‘is there a way we can use it to help us go through some iterations that we do ourselves faster?'”

Howard indicated that Bethesda isn’t using AI to create assets, and instead compared using it to another iteration of Photoshop.
