There Will Be More Kratos Stories, Sony Promises, After God Of War: Laufey Reveal

Sony just announced a new God of War game, God of War: Laufey, and the developers are telling Laufey’s story this time, not one from the perspective of series hero Kratos.

In an interview with IGN, the developers said, “We’ll always tell stories about Kratos,” but for the new game, it was an opportunity to tell a different story.

Laufey, or Fey–the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus–is someone who is “so pivotal” to the wider story, and making a game all about her gave the team a chance to “push beyond into this new world and give us some place to be surprised and see how things connect,” the studio said.

The developers said they reject the idea that God of War: Laufey is a “departure” from the previous games. “It’s more of an expansion,” they said.

In 2018’s God of War, Kratos and Atreus are on a journey to spread Faye’s ashes. Sony Santa Monica creative lead Cory Barlog said Faye was “a phantom and a specter” in the 2018 game, someone who was “omnipresent but visually not represented” in that game.

He said it would be “so interesting” to have made a prequel to see Fey’s life before the events of the 2018 game, but it was equally interesting to the studio “to see how things continue forward.”

In Laufey, Faye ascends to the afterlife of the gods, known as the Everywhen, where she has a lot of monsters to fight. The events of Laufey are happening concurrently with the plot of the 2018 God of War game.

Laufey is coming to PlayStation 5, but the game does not have a release date. Deborah Ann Woll plays Fey, with Jack Quaid playing the role of the gelatinous cube, Phranque, and people have many theories about who he really is.
