During its recent Direct, Nintendo officially announced that the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The movie, made in collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, also got a short trailer that you can check out below. Alongside the title, Nintendo has also confirmed the April 3, 2026 theatrical release date for the movie.
As its name might imply, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will take several of its cues from the critically acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy games that were originally released on the Wii. Much like the two gravity-bending platformers, the upcoming movie will also have protagonist Mario travelling across different planets.
The company also announced that the movie will see actors Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key and Kevin Michael Richardson return to reprise their roles of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Toad, and Kamek respectively. Since the new movie will be based on Super Mario Galaxy, however, we can also expect to see an announcement for who will take on the role of Rosalina in the coming days.
Interestingly, the confirmation that the sequel will be named The Super Mario Galaxy Movie throws a wrench into earlier reports that indicated that the movie would instead be named after 1991 Super NES platformer Super Mario World. These reports came about thanks to NBCUniversal’s 2025-2026 Upfront showcase event naming Super Mario World as one of the projects that the company had in store.
“An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions,” read the website for NBC Universal at.
Key, who will once more play Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, had spoken about the upcoming sequel being “a little broader” in scope over Super The Super Mario Bros. Movie back in October 2024. In an interview, Key had described the movie’s setting as offering up some “very intriguing lore”, as well as the existence of Easter eggs for long-time fans.
“One thing I can say about the second movie is that it’s a little broader in scope, and where it takes place is very intriguing lore and the Mario world,” he said. “They’re going to find some really fantastic Easter eggs and it’s been very exciting so far.”
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was originally announced as an unnamed sequel back in March 2024, and Nintendo had confirmed at the time that Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto would be involved in the film’s production. The announcement was made during MAR10 Day 2024, with Miyamoto being joined by producer Chris Meledandri. The upcoming sequel will also involve Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returning to once more direct.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was incredibly successful when it came out back in 2023, becoming the year’s most profitable movie after making almost $1 billion against the $400 million production budget.
