The physical Switch 2 version for **Final Fantasy VII Rebirth** will be a game card

When it releases on Switch 2 (and Xbox Series) on January 22, 2026, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will go for the much-much criticised game key card format. This is a deliberate choice on the part of Square Enix, and will also be the case for future installments.

In an interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is in the works. This second episode and final installment of the trilogy will be available physically on Switch 2 via a game card.

According to Hamaguchi, this choice is not related to storage concerns on the traditional 64GB card, but rather to the speed of the cartridge. He also said he hopes that players will fully embrace game card keys in the near future.
