The Best Games like Destiny

The Best Games like Destiny

Whether you’re looking for a game like Destiny because you want to broaden your horizons, or because you’re one of the disappointed thousands migrating from the series this year, we’ve compiled a list of games that’ll scratch that same itch. Destiny 2 wasn’t as successful as Sony had hoped following the acquisition, contributing to a $204 million shortfall in 2025, a continually dwindling player count across both games, as well as significant complaints from fans about the apparent decline in the game’s quality. As such, you might be looking to get your kicks elsewhere.

We’ve not quite abandoned ship just yet, especially after our 9/10 Destiny 2 review. No one does it quite like the original, but plenty of games encapsulate its exploratory spirit, fast-paced FPS gameplay, and satisfying loot drops. This list of games will take you far into space and deep into enemy lines. If looting and shooting is your forte, check out our list of the best games like Borderlands, too.

Warframe

  • Developer: Digital Extremes
  • Release Date: March 25, 2013
  • Platforms: PS5, Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox Series X/S, iOS

Warframe is hands-down one of the best free games around, works great on Steam Deck, and is even potentially getting a Switch 2 release. If you like Destiny’s approach to big loot and enjoy exploring space with a gun in your hand, you’ll love what Warframe has to offer. Likewise if you don’t mind a bit of grinding, you’ll find some incredible payoff if you fully commit.

The two games diverge most during combat, which in Warframe is in third-person and arguably puts more emphasis on levelling and developing your character. Warframe is also a faster pace than Destiny, but for many this will come as a welcome change. There’s no messing about–you get in, kill everyone, and get out. There’s never much to lose with a free game, so we’d recommend giving it a solid few hours and seeing if it sticks.

Roboquest

  • Developer: RyseUp Studios
  • Release Date: August 20, 2020
  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

If you closed your eyes and tried to play Roboquest you’d die instantly, but metaphorically you’d soon realise you were handling the game very similarly to Destiny. The game clearly takes inspiration from Destiny, but does it in a way that doesn’t feel overly homage-y or too similar. Roboquest is a completely fresh experience, you just might be at an advantage if you’ve developed Destiny muscle memory.

Roboquest is a randomly-generated roguelike with incredibly frantic-yet-satisfying combat and a wide range of loot diversity. You can play on or offline, with or without friends, and still get the same experience. The ultimate goal is to reach a seamless flow state of shooting, bombing, running, and looting so beautiful it brings a tear to the eye.

Witchfire

  • Developer: The Astronauts
  • Release Date: September 20, 2023
  • Platforms: PC

If Destiny has taught you that you want your enemies intelligent, Witchfire is a great next step. Genuinely challenging but beautifully streamlined, the game’s developers aren’t shy in talking about how much Destiny (and Dark Souls) influenced their design. Although not set in space, instead you’re a witchfinder on the hunt with historical weaponry, you’ll still find a wide variety of enemy types, and use spells and ascension to become ever more powerful.

These upgrades will assist in defeating the bosses of each of the different locales, a challenge which is not to be underestimated. Collecting witchfire and unlocking hidden passageways, gearing up with unique weapons and armor, and expanding the provisions of your safe haven are all integral parts of gameplay that will need serious attention if you’re to survive this gothic world. Here’s a more in-depth look at why you should care about Witchfire.

Avowed

  • Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
  • Release Date: February 13, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S

Although an Obsidian RPG might not be the first thing you think of when you think of games like Destiny, Avowed has a lot to offer fans of FPS looter-shooters. The game actually leans away from a lot of traditional RPG elements and instead lands as more of a quick-fire FPS-with-spells, which keeps up the excitement of games like Destiny but introduces a whole new vibe and avenue of role play.

In fact, when the game was pitched, it was originally a multiplayer game like Destiny mixed with Skyrim, and it didn’t land too far from that tree. It’s a broad and complex game once you get into it, so check out our Avowed guides if you feel like you need a helping hand.

Deep Rock Galactic

  • Developer: Coffee Stain Studios
  • Release Date: February 28, 2018
  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Deep Rock Galactic ticks a lot of boxes. Not only is it reminiscent of Destiny with its co-op FPS chaos, but it’s also a great gateway horror game for when you don’t want to be fully spooked. A far remove from Destiny’s expanse of space, the game instead burrows you deep underground in claustrophobic biomes full of hostile creatures, but the battle-side tension is the same. Relying on your friends to have your back as you turn away from the entrance and get stuck in to mining is not for the faint of heart.

Deep Rock Galactic is an all-round incredible experience for social gamers, and having recently celebrated the game’s 5th anniversary we chalk up a lot of their success to their respect for the community and commitment to irreverence. This is a game that cares about its playerbase, a type of TLC you might need a bit of after your experience with Destiny…

Helldivers 2

  • Developer: Arrowhead Game Studios
  • Release Date: February 8, 2024
  • Platforms: PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S

It’s no secret that we love Helldivers 2, not with our 9/10 Helldivers 2 review, but you’ll understand once you play it. It’s got that tongue-in-cheek Starship Troopers attitude to combat that lightens your burden after a heavy round of running and gunning, it’s got a fun and fresh take on multiplayer action, and remains one of the best shooters currently available almost two years post-launch.

Although the two games are very different in tone and setup, there’s enough argument that if you like one game, you’ll sure as hell like the other. Multiplayer games packed with loot where you’re rapidly shooting aliens in the face should really be its own genre.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

  • Developer: Massive Entertainment
  • Release Date: March 15, 2019
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 might not be as big as Destiny, but it packs in a great deal of the same energy. With adjustable difficulty levels and a far more accessible campaign, this wartime looter-shooter is also a great place for newcomers to start if they found Destiny’s grind a little much. The story is far more compact, but this lends it a sense of depth and pace that will keep you invested in between combat breaks, and it’s one of the best PS5 multiplayer games you could ask for.

Another one where community matters–if you’re feeling burned by Destiny–as Ubisoft have recently committed to developing Survivors Mode in conjunction with fans.

Path of Exile 2

  • Developer: Grinding Gear Games
  • Release Date: December 6, 2024 (Early Access)
  • Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S

Path of Exile 2 is like Diablo meets Destiny, a mash up of all our favourite elements of both–looting, shooting, and plenty of co-op chaos. It’s definitely more toward the action RPG side of the spectrum, but if your aim is true and you love to kit out your character with looted gear, you’ll almost definitely lose hundreds if not thousands of hours to this game. It’s not one of the most popular Steam games of all time for nothing.

The campaign is also nicely spread across six acts, packed with challenges from more than 600 monsters and 100 bosses each with unique movesets and styles. Team up or face them alone, the choice is yours. Either way, you’ll need to load out with a selection of over 700 equipment base types–each with its own unique item. If you’re looking for an all-consuming game with a lot of content, you’ve found it.

Remnant 2

  • Developer: Gunfire Games
  • Release Date: July 25, 2023
  • Platforms: PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S

If you’re a big fan of Destiny and a big fan of Dark Souls, you’ve found the perfect marriage in Remnant 2. Impossibly colossal bosses with disturbing powers, dark storylines that span the ages, and a kill-or-be-killed approach to the local enemy/alien/disturbance–it’s all here. Procedurally generated levels throw up endless challenges, while enemy types, aesthetics, boss characters, NPCs, quests and the game’s story are all also randomly generated. You’re going to have to figure this one out on your own and it’s going to be brutal.

Each defeated boss leads only to stronger and more intelligent enemies, who will push even the most skilled marksman to use all their senses to preempt their attacks. If you’re up for the challenge, Remnant 2 supports up to three players in co-op mode, or you can battle it out alone.

Monster Hunter World

  • Developer: Capcom
  • Release Date: January 26, 2018
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

The one downside of Destiny, even in its heyday, was that there were just not enough dragons. If winged foes are what you seek, Monster Hunter World will be right up your alley, a challenging combat-focused adventure that nabbed a 9/10 review from us, and is one of the best games with dragons we can think of. It’s less explosive and fast-paced than Destiny, but appeals to the crowd who enjoy the deep strategy of levelling, using loot to their advantage, and can appreciate a good RPG. If you want to sift through the series for more monster huntin’ madness, we’ve ranked the Monster Hunter games from best to worst.
