Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally swung into cinemas, and it couldn’t have landed sooner. We were worried all of the trailers and TV spots would give away most of the film.
Luckily, there was still plenty of mystery and surprises, and many fans are saying it’s one of the best Spidey films we’ve gotten in a long, long time.
It’s a shame the video game collaborations have been so disappointing, though…even Fortnite’s wall-crawler skin looked better than what Insomniac produced for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
After your screening you may be keen to play some Spider-Man games, but before you boot up one of the PlayStation titles, let us make a personal recommendation: Marvel MaXimum Collection.
Inside this treasure trove of retro Marvel games you’ll find three Spider-Man adventures that still hold up in the modern day, and some of them can be quite hard to come by on the second-hand market.
Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage
First up is everyone’s favourite; Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage. In this Super NIntendo Entertainment System/Sega Genesis title, Spidey teams up with one of his arch-nemesis Venom to thwart the extra-evil symbiote Carnage.
It’s a side-scrolling beat-em-up where you send bad guys flying through every stage, before taking on a thrilling boss battle. You also fight a Doppelganger resembling Man-Spider in the first level…
Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety
Next up is its direct sequel, Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety. Now if you own a physical copy of this game, especially in the United Kingdom, you’ve got something of a rarity on your hands. Physical copies on the UK second-hand market are being sold for a fortune, so we’d encourage you to keep it in good condition for the future.
Like Maximum Carnage, this game is also a side-scrolling beat-em-up for the SNES and Sega Genesis, though in this game you’ll do battle with a colourful variety of symbiotes.
This time Spider-Man has help, though, as he can call upon Captain America, Hawkeye, Daredevil, Ghost Rider to assist him in battle.

Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge.
Last but by no means least, we have the platformer Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge. This is a great one to play if you enjoyed Spider-Man: Brand New Day and are currently watching the Disney+ series X-Men ‘97.
As the name implies, Spider-Man is joined by the X-Men characters Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm and Gambit as playable characters.
We’d argue this one shows its age a little more than the other two, but it’s still good fun and worth playing if you’ve got nostalgia for the old Spider-Man and X-Men cartoons.
All three of the above games can be found in the Marvel MaXimum Collection, and because they’re modern re-releases they come with some modern improvements.
You can pick which version of the game you’d like to play (SNES or Sega Genesis) and give yourself infinite lives if you’d like to make the experience a little easier.
Also included in the collection is; X-Men: The Arcade Game, Captain America and The Avengers, and Silver Surfer, all of which can be yours for $24.99/£19.99, which is an absolute steal considering how pricey some of these games can be nowadays.
