Steam users can now pick up a free slice of an upcoming game that has the perfect ‘90s throwback that we’re struggling to get over.
Murder Meet Cute is a 1990s-style point-and-click adventure which uses real imagery and interfaces to tell its techno-based horror story, reminiscent of many low budget FMV and adventure games of the time.
In it, you play as Amy Bailey, a self-proclaimed “tech genius” who fixes computers from a small PC repair shop.
As Amy, you run the computer shop overnight as customers come in with their broken PCs, where you sort through their files and try to fix whatever issue it is they’re having.
What follows are a series of puzzles that you must solve across these computers which lead you closer to resolving the problem, ultimately leading you to becoming embroiled in a murder conspiracy.
Between these sections, you interact with the customers and make dialogue choices based on these interactions, which can in turn affect the outcome of the story.
Altogether, while some of the dialogue hasn’t necessarily grabbed us yet, it does feel like the perfect throwback to the 1990s with its retro operating systems, old chatroom interfaces, and mysterious creepy websites you’d happen across by accident.
Although it doesn’t use full-motion video, the use of live-action actors to portray the characters as well as the authentic interfaces and imagery does ring back to those FMV games of the 1990s, as well as modern titles like Her Story and Telling Lies.

Murder Meet Cute‘s free Steam demo is one to check out if you’re old like me and remember the 1990s
In case you were interested in checking it out, Murder Meet Cute has a free demo available to check out now on Steam which you can download to your PC now.
It seems that those who have already been able to check the demo out are also enthusiastic about it too.
“This was so fun! The scene was set right away. I really liked the website portions, just playing around on the computer and chatting was really engrossing. There were so many different little gameplay bits in this that seem super satisfying to get to repeat — I could get sucked into something like this easily! It’s really polished looking for just a demo, even a short one,” reads one positive review of the demo.
“Short even for a demo, but I think it did showcase a cool unique setting. You’re mostly at your musty old computer repair shop, and the vibes are retro/mystery/horror while still being whimsical and not so oppressing,” reads another review.
“It is short but sets things up really well, shows how nosey we all really are (I won’t believe anyone who says they didn’t go through EVERY folder just to see what’s there), and gives enough to leave you wanting more. Can’t wait for the full game to come out,” a third review reads.
There’s no release date set in stone yet for Murder Meet Cute, but it is currently slated for a launch sometime in 2026.
