Steam Adds 9 New Free Games You Can Keep Forever, No Catch

Another weekend, another jam-packed week of new Steam freebies– but how can we best figure out if any of the latest offerings are any good?

Easy, that’s what I’m here for (oh, and all the Steam user reviews, I guess).

No particular ranking for all of today’s free games, but rest assured that they’re all reviewing relatively highly on the platform (except for one, but I included it anyway because Steam reviewers are wrong and the game slaps).

First up, X-Mode from developer xzippyzachx and publisher zxGames.

This one is a pretty straightforward multiplayer first-person shooter, but reviewers on Steam love it. Why? There’s no pay-to-win stuff, the shooting feels tight, and it’s a bug-free experience. Can’t ask for much else when you don’t have to spend a penny.

Empty Throne is a cute little point-and-click dark fantasy game from the developer and publisher of the same name.

As of writing, it only has sixteen reviews, but all of them are positive. And I gotta say, the artwork does look especially pretty.

Rage Quit is a PvE hack-and-slash game developed by students at Vancouver Film School, and I have been seeing this one pop up a lot recently.

Unsurprisingly, really, considering what the reviewers are saying. Combat feels weighty and satisfying, and it seems to be a very polished experience overall. Defo worth a go.

The Spike Cross from developer and publisher SUNCYAN Inc. is a PvP volleyball game, and is apparently a port of a recent mobile title.

Don’t let that put you off however, as it seems the transition from mobile to PC has done the game a lot of good. Might have to try this one out myself (mostly because I’m curious how a PvP volleyball game even works).

Alright, here’s the one I warned you about: DRAGON BALL GEKISHIN SQUADRA from developer GANBARION Co. and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment.

It’s essentially a League of Legends-style MOBA, except with Dragon Ball characters. I’ve been having a lot of fun with it, but I understand why some folks aren’t happy with the monetisation options. Still, I haven’t had to spend a penny to get a lot of playtime out of it yet, but just be warned that your mileage may vary.

taking my Dark Knight Girlfriend to the corner store is a romantic visual novel from developer and publisher ForeverFuture Games, and the user reviews should really speak for themselves this time around.

100% positive, as of writing, with over 120 unique reviews. Also, the art style looks gorgeous, so I already see why people are into it.

REDSHIFT from developer and publisher Gravity Interactive is a “psychological narrative horror game” that just release in early access on Steam.

According to reviewers, it’s relatively short but has some decent scares. Assumedly this will be getting some more updates down the line, so maybe keep an eye on it (once you’ve had your fill).

Road Trip to the End of the World is a very adorable-looking visual novel from developer and publisher Shark and Pelican Games.

Impressive review score aside, the art in this one is gorgeous. Likely worth a go for that alone.

And finally, Consumption Line is an experimental simulation game about the “downsides of modern life” from developer and publisher Rhombico Games.

According to reviewers, there’s a surprisingly in-depth critique here of the modern service industry, which sounds interesting enough to me to earn a playthrough. Just don’t expect anything too lengthy, as the devs outright state that it’s only a 30-minute experience.

And that’s your whole lot! But don’t worry, there will be more in a matter of days… scratch that, I just saw a new game go up in the time it took me to type that.
