Meta shut down several game studios following a report that said the company would be cutting around 10% of its employees from the Reality Labs division. These studios include Armature Studios, Twisted Pixel, and Sanzaru Games.
Sanzaru Games worked on several beloved PlayStation exclusives
Meta confirmed the closures of the game studios, and gave the following statement:
“We said last month that we were shifting some of our investment from Metaverse toward Wearables. This is part of that effort, and we plan to reinvest the savings to support the growth of wearables this year.”
Sanzaru Games was acquired by Meta in February 2020. The studio developed two Oculus/Meta exclusive titles, Asgard’s Wrath and Asgard’s Wrath 2. Both VR games were received incredibly well, garnering average review scores of 88 and 86, respectively. The sequel won Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards and the Coney Island Dreamland Award for Best AR/VR Game at the New York Game Awards.
Most PlayStation players would know the developer from its work on The Sly Collection, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, and God of War Collection. They also assisted in developing the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
Twisted Pixel and Armature Studio were acquired by Meta in October 2022. Twisted Pixel’s most recent release is Marvel’s Deadpool VR, but is mostly known for its Xbox 360 games, ‘Splosion Man and Ms. ‘Splosion Man. Armature Studio developed the VR version of Resident Evil 4. The studio also developed Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and helped port several games to PlayStation Vita, including Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and The Unfinished Swan.
In August 2024, Meta shut down Ready at Dawn due to budgetary constraints. The developer is known for many PlayStation exclusives, including Daxter, God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, and The Order: 1886.
