Saros is Developed on Unreal Engine 5, Includes “Surreal and Mysterious” Narrative Sequences

While Marvel’s Wolverine capped off the latest State of Play in style, Saros kicked things off in a big way. The rogue-lite third-person shooter offers a new setting and mechanics, including projectile absorption and self-revive, but Housemarque shared even more details on the PlayStation Blog.

This includes confirmation of development on Unreal Engine 5 – not the most surprising fact, since Returnal ran on Unreal Engine 4. Nevertheless, despite hitting 60 FPS on PS5, players should expect “tweaks, fixes, and upgrades” since it’s still a work in progress. The gameplay trailer showcased “just one” of many biomes, and alongside Soltari weaponry (like the Phosphorous Shotgun), Arjun also harnesses Carcosan tech to slay foes.

Interestingly, the Carcosan Power Weapon, which is powered by absorbing projectiles with the Soltari Shield, will “corrupt” Arjun. The effects of this are unknown, but it’s an effective way to deal massive damage. Alongside Soltari Holograms outlining what happened on the planet, there are voice-overs, audio logs, NPC conversations and cinematics.

Of course, in keeping with the tone of Returnal, there are also “more surreal and mysterious” storytelling sequences, which Housemarque will delve more into in the future.

Saros launches on March 20th, 2026, for PS5 and wouldn’t have been possible if Sony hadn’t acquired the studio. Head here for more details.
