Resident Evil Open-World Sequel Roasted by Gamers

Resident Evil Open-World Sequel Roasted by Gamers

A cancelled Resident Evil open-world sequel has found itself the subject of ridicule by fans, with many preferring the Resi 9 we’re actually getting next year.

Capcom revealed Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year at Summer Game Fest, and it’s quickly becoming one of the most anticipated games of 2026 (that is, if your game isn’t called GTA 6).

While we’re still a few months away from release, a new leak has cropped up suggesting that Resident Evil Requiem had a rather different premise when it first entered development.

According to Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem, “RE9 was originally going to continue quite directly on the corrupted BSAA plotline RE8 ended with, but that was back in the now scrapped ‘8.5 Apocalypse’ version, which was an open world multiplayer game set on a fictional island around Singapore.”

The corrupted BSAA plotline that Dusk Golem refers to is a late-game plot twist in Resident Evil Village.

In that game’s ending, it’s revealed that the BSAA, a counter-terrorism unit that includes Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, is utilising engineered mutants as its soldiers. Chris’ story in Village ends with him heading to BSAA headquarters to find answers.

“Resident Evil and dropped plot lines, name a more infamous pair!” reads one comment on Reddit.

“Still waiting for a resolution to the Connections group from RE7,” added another. This plotline was expanded in some behind-the-scenes material, but it rightfully deserves resolving in a game.

“I even wonder if RE6 is even canon at this point,” another comment reads. “You would think that almost the entirety of Shanghai being infected would be mentioned somewhere in the files you find in the newer games.”

Other comments focused on the fact that Capcom was allegedly trying to turn Resident Evil 9 into a live-service multiplayer game.

“What’s Capcom’s obsession with making RE MP games, they are ALWAYS a**,” wrote one fan in the comments.

“They want a big multiplayer game where they can monetize the sh** out of it,” theorised another. “The main games are probably successful enough to justify one try after another for the multiplayer projects and if eventually one of them lands a hit they can print their own money with it. I’m sure that’s the plan.”

A reminder that this is just a rumour at this point, and Dusk Golem’s track record has been a little sketchy in the past. So be sure to take all of this with a pinch of salt.
