Developer Treyarch and publisher Activision recently released their latest entry in the popular long-running first-person shooter franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Its campaign mode strays from the series’ typical streamlined experience, and players don’t seem too thrilled about it.

Players cannot pause during Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 campaign because of online requirement

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 campaign is designed to be played cooperatively with others. Those who have started up the campaign probably noticed the main menu selection is worded as “Co-op Campaign.” Furthermore, it can be played online with friends or via matchmaking. As such, this requires players to be online, which disables the ability to actually pause the game.

In a post in the Games subreddit, fans have shared their thoughts on the always-online requirement of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 campaign.

“I grew up loving the Black Ops and Modern Warfare campaigns, but even I couldn’t be baited by nostalgia for Mason and Menendez again, partly because they have new actors. (RIP Kamar de Los Reyes),” writes Reddit user Jasbuddy. “What a shame, this franchise can be described only using the word slop.”

“Remember how great the MW1 and MW2 campaigns were,” says user visualframes. “Hard to believe how far COD has fallen.”

“Campaign looks like it was made by AI. Pure tacked on slop to inflate the value proposition,” writes user mustyfiber90. “The fact that you can’t skip cutscenes, pause the game, and get kicked if you sit idle for too long tells you everything you need to know.”

As of this writing, there aren’t too many reviews out for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, but it seems to be receiving favorable scores for now despite the fans’ current criticisms of its campaign. According to the review aggregate site Metacritic, it has garnered an average score of 84 across 14 critic reviews.
