Popular Lord Of The Rings RPG Drops Free Update After 19 Years

A popular Lord of the Rings RPG has just celebrated its 19th birthday, marking the occasion with a new free update.

The Lord of the Rings Online has been going steady since 2007, and has featured many free updates and big expansions over the years.

Even in 2026, the game still sees a decent number of players. While the Steam player count is fairly low, most players who have been around for years opt to use a separate client, with around 15,000 average concurrent users estimated.

Standing Stone Games has now released another update to The Lord of the Rings Online, completely free for users to check out.

The update features the new Anniversary Event, which starts today, 23 April, and runs until 8am BST on 12 May.

There are quite a lot of notes included with the patch, indicating that it makes some pretty huge changes and additions to the game.

For starters, Standing Stone Games has also added the new premium neighbourhood, the Rivendell Steadings, located “high in the mountains just to the west of the Vale of Imladris”. This housing will open on 64-bit game worlds on 30 April.

There’s also a new questline titled A Glorious Hunt, featuring the character of Mizâdi, which you can find in Hanamíku to start. The first set of quests are available now, with the second set unlocking on 6 May, and the final set on 20 May.

The Lord Of The Rings Online Is Still Getting A Steady Stream Of New Content Almost 20 Years Later

Meanwhile, anniversary barter vendors now stock new Quintessential cosmetics, with a new 19-year gift box with new fireworks and portrait frames for players who previously acquired the 18-year gift box.

New special items for the 19th anniversary include a new Sunstone Drakeling cosmetic pet, new dog and parrot cosmetic pets, and ‘Nineteenth Anniversary Surprise!’ packages that occasionally drop from defeated monsters out in the world.

The Mysterious Stranger inside the Prancing Pony also has four new missions set in the Lone-lands and the North Downs, which are available to all players between levels 20-160 throughout the festival, and all have delvings as an option.

Finally, the new update also adds a new weekly quest to earn Virtue, where starting From the Ashes Comes Virtue – Weekly allows you to turn in a number of embers for Virtue XP.

Here are the full patch notes if you’re interested in seeing everything else that has changed with the update, which can be read on the official Steam announcement.

Originally released in 2007, The Lord of the Rings Online has been the go-to game for many long-term Tolkien fans. In particular, many players enjoy the game’s storytelling for its focus on including content taken from Tolkien’s expanded material, such as characters who only appear in the books or appendices.

It’s set during the War of the Ring, but also has content stretching beyond the destruction of the One Ring and set after the events of the books.
