PlayStation: Major confusion surrounds the 30-day DRM, which may ultimately be a conscious decision

Last weekend, users noticed the introduction of a DRM system on their PlayStation games. When a PlayStation console remains disconnected from the internet for 30 days, digital games purchased after the March system update will have their licenses expire.

Initially, it was reported that this restriction was actually a mistake on Sony’s part. Users had since calmed down, but a new twist has emerged in the last few hours.

A player contacted PlayStation customer support to get more information. A representative apparently confirmed that this measure has officially gone into effect. It is now necessary to reconnect the console to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain access to games purchased since March 2026. After this period, simply reconnecting will apparently renew the license.

The whole situation is confusing, to say the least, since Sony has not made a clear announcement on the matter. Furthermore, the PlayStation customer support bot sometimes contradicts this by stating that the change is not official.

The Japanese company will therefore need to speak out soon to clarify the situation.
