Nioh 3 Ventures to the Bakumatsu as Players Battle the Shinsengumi

A new round of previews is available for Team Ninja’s Nioh 3, and considering the updates made since the limited-time alpha, it’s trending towards a positive direction. Koei Tecmo has also released several new details, including that players will venture to the Bakumatsu in a first for the series.

As a pivotal moment in Japanese history, the Bakumatsu spanned 1853 to 1867 and marked the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Players will thus visit Kiyomizu and Honnoji temples, but thanks to the demonic Crucible, they’ve been warped. Alongside the Yokai, the Shinsengumi, the infamous military police, appear as enemies.

They’ll wield firearms, another first, though you’ll have to be careful of melee combat as well (especially when going up against legendary captain Okita Soji). If that wasn’t enough, historical figures like Takasugi Shinsaku of the Chōshū Domain and then-shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu also play crucial roles.

Nioh 3 launches on February 6th, 2026, for PS5 and PC.
