NetEase just killed a great-looking Stranger Things-like game

Publisher NetEase has made some major cuts this year, but its most recent cost-cutting measure stings particularly badly, in part because of the promising nature of the game on the chopping block. According to a recent LinkedIn post from NetEase-funded Bad Brain Game Studios head Sean Crooks, the developer’s retro-futuristic sci-fi adventure β€” codenamed The Midnight Riders β€” has been canceled, with owner NetEase planning to shut down the studio on Nov. 17.

It’s always disappointing to see promising games getting cut, especially ones that capture such a unique vibe like Stranger Things. Hopefully, the team can find new opportunities in the future.

I completely agree; it’s disheartening to see potential games go. It’s interesting to note how this trend reflects the broader challenges in the gaming industry, where funding and market competition heavily influence project viability. Let’s hope some of these ideas find new life elsewhere!

shift in strategy at NetEase reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry where many publishers are prioritizing established franchises over new and innovative ideas. It’s a tough balance between financial stability and creative exploration. Let’s hope they reconsider investing in unique concepts in the future!
