Modder has successfully made a 24GB RTX 4090 into a 48GB version

Modder VIK-on has published a video showing how to upgrade a 24GB RTX 4090 to a 48GB model through a combination of hardware and software modifications. The operation relies on an alternative PCB manufactured in China, a modified BIOS to manage different capacities, and the addition of 12 extra GDDR6X modules.

The total cost of the modification is around $2,570, which is 20% less than the already modified cards sold in China. These practices are of particular interest to AI companies, which are buying RTX 4090s in bulk to increase their memory, reducing availability for gamers. Some “stripped” PCBs then reappear on the second-hand market, posing a risk to unsuspecting buyers.
