Volumetric fog is coming to Minecraft. Yes, really.
The cube-based sandbox that happily ran on ancient hardware back in 2011 lands on Nintendo Switch 2 on Oct. 27, shipping with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default — which brings enhanced lighting, improved water reflections, directional lighting and more detailed shadows. Mojang made the announcement Wednesday.
This isn’t a port with the resolution nudged upward. Mojang says the release is native and optimized specifically for Switch 2.
The blocks stay blocky
For anyone who has seen a favorite game “modernized” beyond recognition, here’s the reassuring bit: the classic blocky look isn’t going anywhere. What Vibrant Visuals alters is the behavior of light, not the material the world is built from. A dirt block remains a dirt block — it simply throws a better shadow.
Nor was Vibrant Visuals created for this launch. It debuted as part of the Chase the Skies update, among the most significant technical upgrades the game has received since release.
You probably don’t have to buy it twice
Already own Minecraft on the original Switch? You’re taken care of. Mojang is providing an upgrade route to the Switch 2 Edition, which should translate to either a discounted purchase of the native version or access via an eligible Minecraft subscription.
Full details are still outstanding. Even so, the broad outline is clear — and more generous than it needed to be.
Furniture, cushions and one predictable joke
The Switch 2 launch caps a year in which Mojang never stopped shipping. The most recent game drop introduces decorative furniture such as cushions and beds, letting players furnish an interior without hunting down mods.
It’s consistent with how the studio now works: a steady stream of smaller updates rather than a single yearly release. And naturally, once cushions arrived, in-game whoopee cushions weren’t far behind. Of course they weren’t.
The franchise keeps sprawling
Back in June at Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, Mojang and Double Eleven unveiled Minecraft Dungeons 2, following up the dungeon-crawling action RPG from 2020. Due next year, it stacks new biomes, enemies and cooperative adventures on top of the original’s loot-driven gameplay.
A second film is on the way as well, with A Minecraft Movie Squared targeting a 2027 release.
Run from it, hide from it — more Minecraft shows up regardless.
