Metaphor: ReFantazio has been named Game of the Year at the Japan Game Awards

Just hours before the Tokyo Game Show opened, Japan honored the best games of the past year. The Japan Game Awards 2025 have announced their winners!

Unsurprisingly, it was a game developed in Japan that won the top prize. Metaphor: ReFantazio took home the award for Best Game. Meanwhile, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won the Breakthrough Award. Of course, the people at Sandfall Interactive were delighted with this victory.

“Expedition 33 is inspired by many incredible JRPGs that we grew up with and love, which is why being recognized in Japan is both important and very personal to us. We couldn’t be more grateful.”

The Switch 2 won the award from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry for its contribution to the growth of the video game industry in Japan.

Finally, the following ten games won the Excellence Award at the Japan Game Awards 2025.
