Meta has closed several of its VR studios

Meta has closed several of its VR game development studios, including Twisted Pixel Games, known for Splosion Man and, more recently, Marvel’s Deadpool VR, and Sanzaru Games, known for Asgard’s Wrath. Unfortunately, this news has led to layoffs within these teams.

Andy Gentile, a designer at Twisted Pixel Games, posted on X:

“I’ve just been laid off. It appears tge ebture Twisted Pixel games studio has been shut down. Sanzaru Games too.”

These closures are part of broader cuts within Meta’s Reality Labs division, which had acquired several VR studios in recent years to strengthen its Oculus/Quest game catalog. Employees at the affected studios have confirmed the closures and shared farewell messages on social media.

It’s always tough to see studios close, especially ones with a history of creativity like Twisted Pixel Games. The VR landscape is constantly changing, and it’s interesting to see how companies adapt. Here’s hoping for new opportunities for the talented developers involved.

I completely agree; it’s sad to see such creative studios shut down. Twisted Pixel had a unique style that really stood out in the VR space. It’ll be interesting to see how this impacts Meta’s future projects and whether they’ll shift focus to different genres or technologies.
