Insomniac’s Wolverine is set to come out next year claim the latest rumours, as hopes for a Spider-Man spin-off starring Venom re-emerge.

It’s been four years since developer Insomniac announced Marvel’s Wolverine in a cinematic trailer, and they haven’t shown anything else about it since.

In December 2023, the studio confirmed the project was still in development, following a cyberattack which outed ‘early development details’ about the PlayStation 5 exclusive, but that’s all.

An update is long overdue, which might happen at this month’s rumoured State Of Play showcase, but a report has already claimed the title is still set to come out in 2026.

According to sources at MP1ST, Wolverine is ‘still on track for a 2026 release’. This release window was previously outed in the Insomniac leak, which had it down for autumn 2026.

The same report claims the studio’s previously leaked Venom spin-off ‘has been in active development too’, suggesting it is Insomniac’s next release after Wolverine. A Venom spin-off was previously slated for autumn 2025, based on the aforementioned internal leaks, but all signs now point to it being released in 2027 at the earliest if this is true.

The report contains details about the Venom spin-off too, although it warns to take these with a pinch of salt, as they couldn’t be verified. It claims the protagonist will be Eddie Brock, who didn’t make an appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 but is the character most associated with Venom in the comics and movies.

Additionally, the Venom title will apparently star Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage as the main villain, after he appeared during a side-mission in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Carnage was originally rumoured to be a part of Insomniac’s DLC plans for Spider-Man 2, but the studio ruled out any story DLC for the sequel last year. Those plans also included Beetle, as outed via recently discovered voice lines from Miles Morales, where he refers to fighting robots controlled by the villain.

If Venom is still in development, it sounds like Insomniac’s DLC plans for Spider-Man 2 have (at least, partly) rolled into the project – although we’ll have to wait and see if and when it is announced.

Apart from the hack, their plans will also have been altered by the death of Venom voice actor Tony Todd, although changing the host character to Eddie Brook does allow an excuse for that.

In the same report, it’s claimed Insomniac is looking to include Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, into one of their projects. However, it’s unclear if this will be Venom or the inevitable Spider-Man 3, which will likely be a few years away yet.

Sony typically hosts a State Of Play in September, so there’s a chance Insomniac’s Wolverine will show up there. Sony certainly needs to generate some excitement behind its first party slate for 2026, with only Housemarque’s Saros confirmed to launch next year.
