A new experimental PvE game mode is coming to Marathon as part of the mid-season update. This mode sets aside the PvP extraction mechanic to offer players a different kind of experience.
This is Vault Breaker, and it revolves about going into the Cryo Archive, one of the game’s most challenging areas, to face a series of demanding Vaults. Whether playing solo or in co-op, a unique progression system lets players boost their power to reach the final Vault. The reward for this new activity is a new currency that can be exchanged for upgrades, as well as for gear usable in other modes.
Bungie is primarily seeking to attract a wider audience following challenges with player retention. This PvE mode is presented as a parallel, experimental experience and not a replacement for the PvPvE formula that lies at the heart of Marathon.
