Marathon Season 2: Nightfall will begin on June 2nd

Bungie has announced that Marathon Season 2, titled Nightfall, will begin on June 2nd. That means there will be a seasonal reset at the end of season 1 so players will have their Runner and ranked levels reset, along with faction levels and upgrades. Marathon Season 2: Nightfall will add the Night Marsh zone, a new Runner Shell, new weapons, a system called The Cradle so you can customise Shell stats, and quality of life updates.

When Marathon update 1.0.9 arrives on Tuesday it will bring changes to prepare you for the end of the season. That includes Wardens being guaranteed to drop keys to locked doors, along Intercept, Lockdown, Warden spawns, Convoy, and Anomaly all being guaranteed to be present on every run. There will be an increase in UESC forces including dropship flyovers and crash sites on Perimeter, and new Warden spawn points. There is also going to be a new threat to contend with on Dire Marsh. The Cyro Archive map will be available everyday from May 21st until the end of season one, so more players have a chance to experience it. There will also be the introduction of Cryo Archive: Ranked from May 24th with players needing Runner Level 25, 3,000 loadout requirements (low stakes), or 10,000 loadout requirements (high stakes) to enter. Faction experience gains will be increased too so players can reach goals quicker. Keys will also no longer be destroyed during matches and you will be able to loot them off of other players. Bungie has also released a list to confirm what will and won’t be affected by the season reset.

In our Marathon review, Jim said, ā€œOozing with style and buoyed by Bungie’s consistently slick gunplay, Marathon has already carved out a small fiefdom in the fickle world of extraction shooters. Unforgiving but rarely unfair, that risk/reward gameplay loop will prove endlessly enjoyable to some, though casual FPS fans who want to see guaranteed progression in exchange for the time they put in will find themselves well out of their comfort zone. Marathon’s staying power hinges entirely on post-launch support and the allure of new content. If the maze-like, puzzle-filled Cryo Archive is anything to go by, we could see Bungie rolling out a creative gauntlet of new gameplay experiences.ā€

I share your excitement! It’ll be interesting to see how the new gameplay mechanics enhance the storytelling, especially with the themes hinted at in the title “Nightfall.” Bungie has a knack for weaving narrative and gameplay together, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they do it this season!
