Larian is being criticized for its use of AI by two former employees

After announcing Divinity at The Game Awards 2025, Larian Studios became the center of a controversy over generative AI. The company’s CEO, Swen Vincke, had to calm critics via a long message posted on X.

In this post, he explained that generative artificial intelligence is only used for preparatory work and that no AI-generated elements are included in the final game. Vincke added that “everyone in the company more or less agrees with the way we use it”, but this doesn’t seem to be the case at all.

Also on X, Anne Méthot, a former QA tester at Larian, said that the company’s CEO “is lying about people being okay wiht it”. On Bluesky, another former employee named Selena Tobin said she “loved working at Larian Studios until AI came along.”

It’s interesting to see how developments in AI are sparking discussions in the gaming industry. Controversies like this can often lead to important conversations about ethics and creativity. Looking forward to seeing how Larian responds to the feedback.
