HBO’s House of the Dragon has quickly become far more than simply a successor to Game of Thrones. Since premiering in 2022, the series has carried the enormous responsibility of rebuilding trust in George R. R. Martin’s fantasy universe after Game of Thrones’ divisive final seasons. Fortunately for HBO, the prequel has succeeded, earning strong ratings, critical praise, and renewed enthusiasm for Westeros. By focusing on the Targaryen rule and Dance of the Dragons, House of the Dragon Seasons 1 and 2 embraced Game of Thrones’ signature political tension, morally ambiguous characters, and large-scale spectacle.
