What better way to wake up than with an announcement from Team Cherry which has revealed that Hollow Knight: Silksong will welcome its first expansion next year?
Launching back in September as a sequel to 2017’s Hollow Knight, Hollow Knight: Silksong was the Metroidvania that we were all waiting for, especially as its prequel is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time.
Developed by Australian independent developer Team Cherry, Hollow Knight: Silksong follows the story of Hallownest’s former princess and protector Hornet after she is captured and sent to the unfamiliar land of Pharloom.
Originally planned to just be DLC for Hollow Knight, Silksong soon grew into its very own sequel and in just three months, has sold over seven million copies worldwide.
With players having to wait eight years for this sequel, it is safe to assume that none of us thought any other new content would be on the horizon any time soon.
However, just hours ago, Team Cherry announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong would be welcoming its first expansion titled Sea of Sorrow.
Set to launch some time in 2026, Sea of Sorrow will feature new areas, bosses, tools, and the whole expansion will have a nautical theme.
Better yet, it will be free to download for all players who already own Hollow Knight: Silksong on their chosen platform.
“Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home,” the official blog post announcement reads.
“Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further.”
The Good News Continues
Team Cherry wishes to keep further information about this DLC secret for now but if it is anything like Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong, we are in for a treat, even if this is the first time we will see a purely nautical theme.
As well as the DLC announcement, the blog post also reveals that Team Cherry is working on bringing Hollow Knight to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Featuring all of the updates and enhancements such as high-frame rates, higher resolutions and graphical effects, the Nintendo Switch 2 version update will be free next year.
“In preparation for that release, we’ll be updating all versions of the original game for current platforms, adding features and fixing bugs,” the blog post continues.
So there you have it! It is an exciting time to be a Hollow Knight fan as players look forward to both the Sea of Sorrow expansion and the Nintendo Switch 2 port for Hollow Knight in 2026.
