Hello Games discusses the complexity of optimizing the No Man’s Sky patches for handhelds

For nearly a decade now, Hello Games has been releasing regular updates for No Man’s Sky. Each update brings new content, visual improvements, and fresh gameplay elements. As a result, some platforms may struggle to handle all these new features.

Martin Griffiths, a engine programmer at the British studio, discussed this complexity. He revealed that the Switch, Switch 2, and Steam Deck require significant optimization work whenever a patch is released. These versions take two to three times longer to develop than others due to memory constraints that are nearly impossible to overcome.

“Mobile platforms like the Switch 1 and 2, as well as the Steam Deck, take a disproportionate amount of engineering time with every update we release. A bunch of us at Hello Games probably spend two to three times as much time making sure these updates run smoothly.”
