Halo: Combat Evolved was and still is a revolutionary shooter, and it deserves a lot of respect.
It’s for that reason and that reason alone that many are nervous about the supposed remake coming from Halo Studios, which could not only alter the story but the gameplay that helped kick-off an epic sci-fi franchise.
Neither Halo Studios or Xbox has confirmed a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved is in the works, but we do know the next Halo game is being made with Unreal Engine 5, and to show off the kind of tech its currently working with, Halo Studios published some gorgeous images of Master Chief fighting Covenant forces.
In the images he’s wearing the Mk V armour from Halo: Combat Evolved, adding creditably to the rumours, though this could just be placeholder assets.
That said, leakers like Rebs Gaming are still adamant the remake is going ahead, and have shared some insider leaks of the gameplay.
Apparently the remake won’t be a 1:1 recreation of Halo: Combat Evolved, a good thing in my opinion, and that’s obvious by the alleged inclusion of a sprint mechanic…
Any Halo fan would know that sprinting has been one of the most controversial additions to the Halo gameplay formula ever, and many have debated its place in the series ever since its inclusion in Halo: Reach.
Personally I could take it or leave it. As an armour ability in Halo: Reach it was fine, in Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians it felt…fine and in Halo: Infinite I think it works well with the grappling hook mechanic.
That said there are a lot of people out there who despite sprinting, so for many its inclusion in a Halo: Combat Evolved remake could be a dealbreaker.
It’s also said the remake will have a lot in common with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
The Bethesda game still ran on its original engine, Gamebryo, but with Unreal Engine 5 displayed over the top to make it look prettier.
The Halo: Combat Evolved remake will apparently be made of a hybrid between Unreal Engine 5 and Blam, giving us some hopefully gorgeous visuals as well as gameplay not dissimilar to what we’ve had already.
Take all of this with a pinch of salt though as nothing has been confirmed as of yet, so there’s a lot left up in the air.
