The Last of Us Part 1 is a remake of the classic PS3 game that substantially updates its visuals while preserving its gameplay and story. While several quality-of-life features were introduced in this version, the core experience has been retained and is still an effective game that mixes action, exploration, and survival-horror themes together. In addition to the main campaign, this version of the game also includes the Left Behind prequel chapter, new weapons, upgrades, visual filters, and a Speedrun Mode.

The Last of Us Part 2 continues the story that began in the first game, and its PS5 edition is also a noticeable upgrade when compared to the original PS4 release. Graphical improvements and improved loading times on PS5 make for welcome improvements, and the game also features behind-the-scenes commentary from developers at Naughty Dog to show how several scenes were created, unlockable visual filters and cheat codes, Lost Levels that let you explore early-development versions of three levels not seen in the original game, and the fan-favorite Guitar Free Play mode for when you want to strum a few chords.
The other big addition was No Return, a roguelike survival mode that tests your skills against scavengers, bandits, and infected people in across a series of levels. The mode has since received several updates since it was first introduced, and it even includes an unlockable cosmetic inspired by Naughty Dog’s next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
If you’ve never played it, The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic future, where society has collapsed after a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus has infected and turned most of the populace into rabid monsters. The first game explored themes of loss and redemption as protagonists Joel and Ellie trekked across the remains of the US, while the sequel is a brutal tale of revenge. Both games are among the most critically acclaimed titles on the PS5, thanks to their harrowing post-apocalyptic stories, which have been adapted into the ongoing The Last of Us TV series on HBO.
