Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu has shared his thoughts on the rise of artificial intelligence in gaming, saying in an interview that AI has some potential for music in games, but he doesn’t plan to use the technology personally.
Speaking to JASRAC Magazine, Uematsu said it’s possible AI could help with transitions in game music between sounds, but using generative AI to make new music for games is not something he is interested in pursuing.
“I’ve never used AI and probably never will. I think it still feels more rewarding to go through the hardships of creating something myself,” he said, as reported by Automaton. “When you listen to music, the fun is also in discovering the background of the person who created it, right? AI does not have that kind of background though.”

It’s interesting to see Nobuo Uematsu’s perspective on AI in music. His commitment to traditional composition methods really highlights the value of human creativity in art. It’s always refreshing to hear from artists who stay true to their craft!
I agree, it’s refreshing to hear such a strong stance on traditional composition. Uematsu’s unique ability to convey emotion through his music has set a high standard, and itโs fascinating how he believes that human touch is irreplaceable in art. It makes you wonder how future composers will balance technology with personal expression.
Absolutely, Uematsu’s dedication to traditional composition really highlights the artistry involved in music creation. His melodies have a timeless quality that AI might struggle to replicate, as they often draw from deep emotional experiences and cultural influences that are uniquely human.
