If you’re sick of playing through the same old radiant quests over and over again in Fallout 4, perhaps you may want to look into selling your services to some of the more interesting characters that the Commonwealth has to offer by roleplaying as a mercenary in Guns for Hire.
I think Fallout 4 gets a lot of unfair stick from gamers. Sure, the settlement stuff is occasionally a pain in the butt, and the story is a bit of a mess, but Fallout: New Vegas was always going to be a tough act to follow.
However, one thing I think it’s very fair to criticise it for is its radiant quests system. I understand that Bethesda wanted to make the game feel like it was never-ending and infinite, but these repeating quests ended up ruining the immersion for me.
Oh, you need me to go to this place and kill these guys? That’s funny, two hours ago a different person asked me to go to that same place and kill those same guys.
If you find yourself running into the same problem, you may want to check out the mod Gun For Hire – Commonwealth Mercenary Jobs by author FlashyJoer on Nexus, which takes aim at the never-ending stream of cookie-cutter radiant quests by giving players access to their own mercenary business.
Simply mosey on over to Diamond City and step into your new place of work, complete with a fully voiced assistant to dish out quests.
According to FlashyJoer, there are 34 unique jobs to choose from, allowing you to roleplay as a run of the mill merc, or detective hunting down missing persons, or even a bodyguard protecting the local populace from raiders and super mutants.
Plus, the custom quests even feature over 5,200 recorded lines of dialogue and unique choice-based outcomes. The modder even added a completely new merc hiring function to the game, allowing you to bring up to three extra followers along for the ride.
Do you wanna be a goody-two-shoes detective that rights wrongs and takes on missing persons quests, or do you wanna gun down some innocents for a big payday? The choice is yours.
Here’s hoping that Fallout 5 features something similar to this, because this mod looks like the type of thing that should have been in the base game from the outset.
Looking forward to seeing if Bethesda implements something similar when the next mainline Fallout game comes out in 2045.
