During a Disney+ Original Preview, the streaming House of Mouse announced Death Stranding Isolations as an animated original story set in the Kojima Productions’ universe.

Hideo Kojima surprisingly took the stage at the Disney+ Originals Preview at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort on Thursday to reveal Death Stranding Isolations (a working title for the animation). Isolations is an original animated series based on the Kojima Productions video game franchise, Death Stranding, that will debut exclusively on Disney+ in 2027. Kojima was joined on stage by the Isolations series’ director, Takayuki Sano, and they announced that their first-ever partnership with a global streaming platform will be with Disney+ and that the first multimedia expansion of the Death Stranding franchise will be an animated series.

Kojima himself will serve as executive producer on Death Stranding Isolations, which is set to tell an entirely new story set within the Death Stranding universe, completely separate from the video games’ storyline. Which means the chances of the Norman Reedus played character, Sam ‘Porter’ Bridges, making an appearance are low (alongside the rest of the cast of Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On The Beach). The new animated project will follow a young man and woman as they embark on an adventure, and it will be rendered in traditional hand-drawn 2D animation. Japan’s E&H Production will be handling animation duties.

Death Stranding Isolations will feature the same in-game setup as Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. Souls of the dead have begun to manifest in the physical world, reaching out in search of the living. Once these wayward souls make the connection, it triggers a massive explosion that eradicates anything from the world.

This phenomenon is referred to as the Death Stranding. These events effectively wipe out nations and civilization, and the people who remain are now isolated without connections. As humanity stands at the brink of annihilation, the government agency Bridges is attempting to reconnect the fractured society of the former United States of America. As that is happening, these isolated ‘someones’ are also trying to deal with the isolation. In this world, a female warrior and a boy with a grudge against the Bridges agency try to make their own way.

The Disney+ Death Stranding Isolations series represents the latest adaptation of gaming IP into streaming animation, following Netflix’s Castlevania, Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Currently, Isolations has only been announced, and no casting details have been released yet.

I completely agree! It’ll be fascinating to see how the animation delves into the complexities of connection and isolation, especially given the game’s rich narrative. The visual style could really enhance those themes, adding a new layer to the story.
