Dark Souls Remake Can Wait, PC Users Get Free Alternative

The first Dark Souls game doesn’t need an official remake when PC users have this free alternative instead.

It’s recently been rumoured that all three Dark Souls games have had remakes greenlit by FromSoftware, which would be a real kick in the teeth for Bloodborne fans to say the least.

At the time of writing nothing can be confirmed just yet but while we wait the question has to be asked. Does the trilogy even need remaking?

While you ponder that check out the next best thing below, which you can download and play for free on PC right now.

Dark Souls Remastered Has Been Remastered

The first Dark Souls game is largely responsible for kicking off the soulslike craze despite Demon Souls technically being the genesis of the genre as we know it today.

Personally it’s my favourite game ever made so an official remake would be greatly appreciated, but if not this will do instead…

Dark Souls Re-Remastered is the overhaul FromSoftware might be on the cusp of giving to the game albeit with a higher budget and probably more hidden walls.

The free mod does so much to the game we’d be here all day going through it all, but some of the highlights include; dynamic shadows, upscaled textures, lighting improvements, clearer water and much more.

One of the best changes the mod makes is to the map itself, as it improves the map geometry allowing you to more clearly see future or previous areas depending on where you are in the world.

For those who somehow haven’t played Dark Souls it features a fully interconnected open world, meaning depending on where you’re standing you can see areas you’re yet to set foot in or have just come out of. The OG game had to obscure the details but this mod fixes that allowing you to see areas like Blightdown clearly from Firelink Shrine.

Dark Souls Re-Remastered will also work on a Steam Deck for those who like the novelty of playing these games on a handheld.

The only downside is the upscaled textures were done by AI which might be a dealbreaker for many.

Some might argue using AI for menial tasks like that is fine but we know there are plenty of gamers out there who despite the tools in all of their forms, so it’s up to you whether this mod is worth your time.

What Are Our Hopes For A Dark Souls Remake?

If FromSoftware does plan on remaking the OG Dark Souls it has the opportunity to do something wonderful, actually finish the game.

Time crunch and budget issues meant several areas featured in the game are largely unfinished, and some of the late-game bosses suffer from this too.

A remake could be exactly what the game needs to have its original vision realised, but this of course comes with its own challenges like staying faithful to what gamers loved about it in the first place.

As long as Bed of Chaos gets reworked into an actual good boss fight, we’re happy.
