Dan Houser speaks out on AI and the controversies surrounding GTA

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser is currently on a promotional tour for his futuristic thriller novel called A Better Paradise. During a recent interview on Virgin Radio UK, the English director discussed a range of topics.

Of course, Houser couldn’t avoid the controversies surrounding generative artificial intelligence. In particular, he said that people who advocate the widespread use of AI are “not the most human or creative”.

“Some of these people who are trying to define the future of humanity, creativity, or anything else through AI are not the most human or creative.

They’re kind of saying, β€˜We’re more human than you,’ which is obviously not true. Another thing we’re trying to highlight is that humanity is being pulled in one direction by a certain group of people who may not be fully human.

[…] I believe that AI will ultimately destroy itself. AI models scour the internet for information, but the internet is going to become increasingly saturated with information produced by these same models. It’s a bit like when cows were fed other cows and caught mad cow disease.”

Finally, Dan Houser also discussed the scandals surrounding GTA. He accuses the US government of making the license and video games in general scapegoats β€œfor reasons of public decency.”

“They couldn’t go after Hollywood because that industry makes them a lot of money, nor could they go after rap music, which had questionable racial connotations. So they went after video games. An easy scapegoat that didn’t understand the system.”
